NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee Produces Patient Support Video for Commissioned Service Uned Gobaith

The NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee (NWJCC) has worked with one of their commissioned services, the Uned Gobaith Mother and Baby Unit in Neath, to produce a new patient support video.

Uned Gobaith, meaning “Unit of Hope” is an acute psychiatric ward providing multi-disciplinary specialist mental health care to women and their babies, up to one year old.

The Unit is one of the services commissioned by the NWJCC, on behalf of patients across Wales who need specialist perinatal mental health care.

Created in response to patient feedback, the video aims to ease pre-admission anxiety by offering a clear and reassuring overview of what to expect at the Unit.

Adrian Clarke, Interim Director of Commissioning for Specialist Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Vulnerable Groups at NWJCC, said: “Listening to patient feedback is vital to improving individual experiences and achieving better patient outcomes.

“As the national commissioner for specialist mental health services, our team at NWJCC works closely with patients and providers to ensure services are responsive, high-quality, and person-centred.

“As such the video was developed in direct response to patient feedback.

“The patient feedback highlighted that the admission process to Uned Gobaith can feel overwhelming, particularly in this instance where patients are already experiencing mental health challenges.”

Patients using the commissioned service, expressed that having a video to guide them through what to expect would help ease anxiety and improve their overall experience of using the service.

“This is one of the ways that the NWJCC is maximising value and ensuring quality in commissioned services across Wales, reflecting the NWJCC's commitment to fostering collaboration and striving for excellence in specialist mental health services across Wales,” continued Adrian.

“This commissioned service also supports national priorities by involving patients in service design, promoting integrated, person-centred care, and focusing on long-term improvements in wellbeing, principles central to both the Healthier Wales Plan and the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015.”

“We’re pleased to have worked in partnership with the team at Uned Gobaith to create this video, which we hope will offer reassurance and clarity during what can be an emotionally challenging time for patients and their families.

“We look forward to seeing how it supports patients during pre-admission and will continue to follow up to understand its impact on their wellbeing.”
