NWJCC celebrates award-winning collaboration at the Moondance Cancer Awards

The NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee (NWJCC) has been part of a collaboration recognised at the Moondance Cancer Awards, winning the Cancer Treatment – Innovation and Improvement category with the South East Wales Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) team.

Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) often leads to delayed diagnosis, unclear responsibility and limited treatment options. The South East Wales CUP team, led by Consultant Oncologist Sonali Dasgupta, established an innovative, specialist service developed through partnership working across organisations in Wales.

This approach brings patients into a single, coordinated pathway, where cancer specialists from different disciplines meet quickly to agree diagnosis and personalised, genomics‑led treatment plans, helping to reduce delays and improve outcomes.

Through this model, patients benefit from clearer treatment plans, improved access to targeted therapies and better overall outcomes, transforming CUP care across Wales.

The collaboration includes partners from Velindre University NHS Trust, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, NHS Wales Performance and Improvement, the All Wales Medical Genomics Service, the Centre for Trials Research at Cardiff University and the Wales Cancer Research Centre.

Congratulations to all colleagues and partners involved in this achievement. This national recognition highlights the impact of partnership working across NHS Wales in delivering more effective, patient‑centred cancer services.

The Moondance Cancer Awards celebrate excellence and innovation across cancer services in Wales, recognising the individuals and teams driving improvements in care.
