Neurosciences

Welcome to the Neurosciences, where we are committed to ensuring access to comprehensive and specialised care for individuals with neurological conditions and rehabilitation needs across Wales.

In our commissioning portfolio, we prioritise access to advanced neurosurgical interventions, including Neurosurgery and Thrombectomy Services, which are vital for treating conditions such as brain tumors and acute stroke. Additionally, we facilitate access to specialised imaging services through Neuroradiology, enabling accurate diagnosis and treatment planning for neurological conditions.

Our department oversees the provision of Stereotactic Radiosurgery, a precise non-invasive treatment option for brain tumors and other neurological disorders. We also commission Specialist Neurorehabilitation and Specialist Spinal Rehabilitation services, supporting individuals in their recovery and rehabilitation journey following neurological injury or illness.

Furthermore, we ensure access to Artificial Limbs and Appliances Services, including Orbital prosthetics, to improve the quality of life for individuals with limb loss or facial disfigurement. Additionally, we support access to Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) devices for individuals with communication difficulties, empowering them to communicate effectively.

Our commissioning efforts extend to the management of rare neurological conditions, including Inherited White Matter Disorders, through specialised services and support. We also oversee Cochlear and Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) services, providing access to auditory prostheses for individuals with hearing loss.

Moreover, our department supports individuals with movement disorders through Deep Brain Stimulation services, offering targeted neurostimulation for conditions such as Parkinson's disease and essential tremor.

At the Neurological and Rehabilitation Services Commissioning Department, we are dedicated to improving outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by neurological conditions and rehabilitation needs. Through strategic commissioning, collaboration with stakeholders, and continuous quality improvement initiatives, we strive to ensure equitable access to specialised care and support services across Wales.
